What is the Mahabharata?

The Mahabharata is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India, traditionally attributed to the sage Vyasa. Composed of over 200,000 verses, it is the longest epic poem ever written—roughly ten times the length of the Iliad and Odyssey combined.

At its heart lies the story of the Kurukshetra War—a devastating conflict between two branches of a royal family, the Pandavas and the Kauravas. But it is far more than a war story; it is a profound exploration of dharma (duty), righteousness, morality, and the human condition.

Within its pages, you'll find the Bhagavad Gita—Krishna's divine discourse to Arjuna on the battlefield—a spiritual cornerstone that continues to guide millions today.

1

Adi Parva

The Book of the Beginning

The first and longest Parva introduces the epic's genesis, narrating how Vyasa composed the Mahabharata and how Ugrashrava Sauti recites it at Janamejaya's snake sacrifice. It covers the complete lineage of the Bharata dynasty, the birth of the Pandavas and Kauravas, their childhood rivalries, and the foundational events that set the stage for the great conflict. The Parva establishes the cosmic significance of the epic as the fifth Veda.
