In-Depth Analysis
Following her abduction by Bhishma and the premature death of her husband Vichitravirya, Ambalika is instructed to bear an heir through the terrifying ascetic Sage Vyasa.
Witnessing her older sister's mistake, Ambalika keeps her eyes open during the Niyoga ritual but is so horrified by Vyasa’s rugged, fearful visage that she turns completely pale with fright.
As a direct consequence of her pallor, her son Pandu is born unnaturally pale (often described as jaundiced or having vitiligo), an ailment that eventually forces him to renounce the throne and retreat to the forest.
Lesser-Known Facts
- Satyavati asked for a third surrogate attempt because of Ambika and Ambalika's flaws, but the princesses, terrified of Vyasa, substituted a devoted maidservant, who bore the perfectly capable Vidura.
