Balarama

Also known as:BaladevaRamaRohini-nandanaAnantaSankarshana

The physically massive, plow-wielding elder brother of Lord Krishna, operating as a fiercely independent, highly volatile neutral force whose immense power significantly complicated the geopolitical landscape of the epic. While Krishna covertly yet decisively threw his entire strategic weight behind the Pandavas, Balarama maintained a deep, conflicting affection for Duryodhana, having personally trained both him and Bhima in the devastating arts of mace warfare. Deeply repulsed by the rapidly escalating deceit and the inevitable violation of ancient chivalric codes required to win the conflict, Balarama outright refused to participate in the Kurukshetra war, abandoning the continent entirely to undertake an extensive, purifying pilgrimage. He returned precisely on the final day, only to witness Bhima shatter Duryodhana's thighs in a highly controversial, foul blow; enraged, Balarama nearly executed Bhima on the spot before Krishna intervened with complex theological justifications. He ultimately survived the war only to witness the catastrophic, alcohol-fueled annihilation of his own Yadava clan decades later, peacefully abandoning his physical body in the forest as a colossal white serpent emerged from his mouth.

First appears in Adi Parva (Canto 95)
