Drupada
The intensely proud King of Panchala whose entire life is defined by a desperate, consuming desire for political revenge, initiating the births of the epic's major catalysts. Originally a beloved childhood friend of Drona, Drupada arrogantly rejected him in adulthood, mockingly declaring that friendship can only exist between equals in wealth and power, brutally humiliating the impoverished Brahmin. In retaliation, Drona heavily trained the Kuru princes and commanded them to launch a massive invasion of Panchala, decisively crushing Drupada's army and annexing half his kingdom. Consumed by a pathological need for vengeance, Drupada performed an immense, terrifying fire sacrifice specifically designed to generate children who would annihilate Drona and the Kuru dynasty. From this roaring sacrificial fire emerged the fully grown, devastatingly beautiful Draupadi (destined to marry Arjuna) and the fierce commander Dhrishtadyumna (destined to brutally decapitate Drona).
